Choosing a cheaper system is more costly long term
Last week on the Sunshine Coast the Qld Fire and Rescue had to attend another house fire started by a solar system at the rooftop electrical isolator. These events are happening all the time.
Having been in the solar industry a long time, I have seen too many of these incidents occur. Typically these are inferior, cheap products that are failing and the Clean Energy Council has a list of recalled products. They have also now banned many cheaper systems from being upgraded in size or having batteries fitted to them as they’ve shown to be lacking in quality.
I’m constantly staggered to see the cheap systems that are advertised out there, knowing the cheap components that go into these sorts of…. cheap systems. There’s a reason we have a saying “you get what you pay for.” When the last huge product recall was forced on the industry, it was discovered that 27000 cheap electrical isolators of just 1 brand had been installed. 27000! I found out that these brands were a quarter the price of the brand I pay and am saddened for those customers that believed they were getting a higher quality system.
That is why I made the decision a long time ago to only install the highest quality system which have proven themselves to be the safest, most powerful systems available. Our customers have benefited and so has our company.
Most people don’t know it, but the traditional single inverter solar system, no matter what brand, is a high DC voltage system, typically 350-500VDC. Its magnified even more on commercial systems where 800-1000VDC is common!
Due to many faults/breakdowns/fires, in 2013 the Federal Government made ALL DC systems hide their wiring in heavy duty conduit and label it “Warning Solar DC”. In 2015 the Clean Energy Council installation guidelines went even further:
7.10 PV array DC isolator at array (NOT APPLICABLE FOR MICRO INVERTER SYSTEMS) The positive and negative terminal of a solar array or sub-array represents a hazard with potentially high risk when the output voltage is 120V DC or above.

There is an alternative!
Our Micro Inverter solar systems are AC coupled or wired, good old 240V just like your entire house has always been. Even the Clean Energy Council acknowledges our Micro Inverter Systems as being inherently safer! Going further, if an issue with eg. a panel is detected, the system will trip off, just like you would expect a faulty toaster to.
Why can’t a DC system do this? Because it can’t, it wasn’t designed to and this is the problem. Think of it like a burst water pipe, the water keeps coming out until you find out about it and then do something about it. By then unfortunately for many building owners, it’s too late.
Don’t compromise on safety and performance just to save a few dollars, as thousands of owners have been stung by marketing and cheap systems which were promised to be just as good.
