Rooftop Solar Overtakes Coal as Biggest Power Station in Queensland
Thanks to Queensland homeowners and businesses adding 25MW of solar photovoltaic capacity earlier in the spring, an environmental and economic milestone has been reached. Coal fired energy has been dethroned as the number one generator of power in the state, with rooftop solar panels generating 1,805MW compared to the 1,780MW generated by the Gladstone coal fired power station. The popularity of solar panels along the Sunshine Coast is revolutionising Queensland’s energy usage habits, and inspiring others to do the same.
Queensland is not alone when it comes to solar surpassing coal. The Australian Capital Territory has contracted a number of new solar and wind farms. The state is on track to having almost all its electricity needs sourced by solar power and other renewables within the next three years.
Western and South Australia, however, have some catching up to do. The Muja power station in Western Australia generates 854MW and rooftop solar only generates 696MW. Rooftop solar power in South Australia is currently 722MW. The Torrens Island gas fired power station generates 1280MW, but it is 50 years old and has not been able to run all eight of its units at the same time since January 2016. Its owners have likened the power station to an elderly person “sitting in a retirement home”.
It’s easy to see why Queensland is transitioning to renewable energy, especially solar. Environmentally, the Gladstone power station “emits approximately 11.8 million tonnes of greenhouse gas each year, versus zero from the sun”, as energy minister Mark Bailey succinctly put it at a conference in March.
Economically, using solar power has saved people hundreds, even thousands, of dollars off what they have paid on electric bills–a savings of up to 60% for many Hush Energy customers on the Sunshine Coast.
